Bull sharks tracking expands to Cha-am and Pranburi beaches

Officials of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) and related state agencies are preparing to explore the hunting areas of bull sharks from Hua Hin to Cha-am and Pranburi beaches so as to ensure full safety for swimmers.

The expansion of bull sharks-tracking operation from Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district to Pranburi district and Phetchaburi’s Cha-am district came after officials found at least six bull sharks in the sea off Hat Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin over the past few days.

On April 15, a 54-year-old Norwegian man was injured in a bull shark attack as he was swimming in Hat Sai Noi area.

A bull shark was spotted in Hat Sai Noi area last night.

DMCR officials said they prepared to explore the hunting areas of bull sharks beyond Hua Hin beach to Cha-am and Pranburi beaches before map out safety measures for locals and tourists to prevent the recurrence of shark attacks.

Officials will seek information from fishermen on their sightings of the bull sharks in order to know their hunting grounds.

All information would be used to fix the safe area to deploy safety nets and bouys in the sea to ensure safe swimming for tourists.

Within this week, the first safety net of 400 metres long and 6 metres wide will be installed 50 metres off the beach at Hat Sai Noi.

The sea where the net is installed in about 4 metres deep, they said, adding that the net will prevent not only sharks but also lethal jelly fishes from getting into the swimming area.
