Hat Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin where a Norwegian tourist was attacked by a bull shark was temporarily closed and swimmers were forbidden to swim there as a precautionary measure to prevent possible recurrence of shark attacks.
Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Pallop Sinhaseni who imposed the beach closure and swimming ban in the area said Wednesday (April 18) that the sea at Hat Sai Noi beach, Ban Khao Tao, would be the first beach in Hua Hin to be cordoned off with a safety net to prevent sharks from swimming into the shallow water close to the beach and attacking swimmers.
He added that buoys would also be erected in the area.
The measure was welcome by tourism-related business operators as they believe that this would not discourage tourists from visiting Hua Hin.
Meanwhile, patrol boats continue to comb the sea to look for sharks while drones have also been deployed to help in the search and surveillance. Hotels were also notified by the authorities to warn their guests to exercise additional caution while swimming in the sea, to avoid swimming in deep or murky water and not to wear bright-coloured swimsuits.
Mr Sophon Thongdee, deputy director-general of Marine and Coastal Resources Department, said that, given the wounds inflicted on the legs of the Norwegian tourist who was attacked on April 15, it was believed the victim was attacked by a young bull shark of less than one-year old and less than one metre long.
