Old man dies two weeks after being kicked by a motorcyclist

Written by Thailand News

The 82-year-old scanvenger kicked unconscious by a 21-year-old man two weeks ago in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district had succumbed to death last night (March 29) at Rajavithi hospital.

The death of the old man, Charoon Meephan, prompted Huai Khwang police to summon the suspect, Mr Narathorn Sodtiyang, who was earlier charged with assault causing injuries, to acknowledge a new charge of assault causing death.

The incident occurred on March 13. Mr Narathorn was caught by CCTV cameras using a mobile phone while riding his motorcycle which later crashed with Charoon’s three-wheel bicycle.

Mr Narathorn then walked toward the old man and assaulted him.

Mr Narathon later turned himself in to Huai Khwang police and apologized the old man’s family for his unruly assault. He also promised to compensate the old man. He was later freed on bail.

But after Charoon’s death last night, the police summoned him to hear severer charge of body assault causing death.

Huai Khwang police superintendent Pol Col Kampol Ratanaprateep said the police would await autopsy result for the exact cause of death.

Mr Narathon reported himself to the police last night and denied the charge. He was escorted to the Criminal Court to seek detention permission today (March 30).
