More than half of the 76 centres for the destitute were found to be plagued with graft

Anti-corruption officials have so far found evidence of corruption in 44 out of a total of 76 centres for the destitute after a nationwide investigation was launched on February 13 since the exposure of embezzlement at the Khon Kaen centre by a handful of student interns.

Acting secretary-general of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Lt-Col Kornthip Darote thanked centre officials and members of the public who came forward to offer information about the alleged corruption to PACC officials.
He expected that, in the next 1-2 weeks, PACC would be able to implicate officials of all levels who were involved in the plundering of fund meant for the destitute for their own benefits.

About 97 million baht of the fund for the destitute were found to have been embezzled so far from the centres of the destitute already examined by PACC officials.

The northeastern region came top with corruption being found in 17 provinces, followed by nine provinces in the South, six provinces in the North and two provinces in the western region.

PACC officials will this week expand their investigation to include self-help cooperatives in the Northeast where about 30 million baht had been allocated to help the poor.
