The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation has wanted the police to file charges against wife of Italian-Thai boss for illegal possession of African tusks.

Mr Anuwat Leelapata, head of the Yiew Dong task force of the DNPWPC, met with Pol Maj-Gen Panya Pinsook, commander of the Suppression Against Violations of Natural Resources and Environment Division, for discussion on the department’s recommendation that ITD boss Premchai Karnasuta’s Common Law wife, Mrs Kanita Witthayanan, should be charged for illegal possession of two pairs of African tusks found in their house.

Officials of the department found out that the four ivory tusks were not Asiatic tusks as declared with the department back in 2015, but were actually African tusks. Violation is liable to 4 years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of 40,000 baht.

Meanwhile, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment General Surasak Kanchanarat said the DNPWPC would lodge a complaint with the police to charge Mr Premchai’s wife for illegal possession of African tusks.

As for the ongoing case against Premchai, the minister assured that the ITD boss would be treated like any other suspects without any privilege, claiming that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had ordered authorities concerned to treat the case in a straightforward manner.

He disclosed that Pol Gen Jarumporn Suramanee, a member of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, would meet with police inquiry officers handling the illegal hunting case to discuss the case on Thursday while the committee following up the case will meet on March 12.
