A local freight train derailed in Songkhla and a passenger train in Trang disrupting rail service to and from the Deep South and Bangkok on Thursday (March 1).
Repair works at both locations are still underway as the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said it expected the rail service would be back to normal by 8pm tonight.
The freight train derailed at Bang Klam district of Songkhla province at 9am Thursday, stranding passengers on several south-bound and Bangkok-bound trains.
SRT officials said the locomotive of the 1552 freight train with rocks as its cargo jumped off the rails while it was running between Kuan Niang and Hat Yai railway stations. No one was injured.
The derailment forced a passenger train from Bangkok to Hat Yai to be stranded at Kuan Niang station.
Passengers on the train were later transported by buses to Hat Yai.
Meanwhile all trains leaving the Deep South for Bangkok were stranded at Hat Yai station.
The SRT officials said stranded passengers were allowed to refund and take other transportation to their destinations.
Meanwhile, a train No 38 from Bangkok to Trang also derailed while it was running from Huay Yot to Trang railway stations.
The derailment also stranded hundreds of passengers on several local trains, and trains from Bangkok.
