Environment Minister assures Thung Yai Naresuan hunting team won’t be spared

Written by Thailand News

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Gen Surasak Karnjanarat reiterated Tuesday  (Feb 27) that tough legal action would be taken against wrongdoers in the Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary hunting case.

Gen Surasak also denied environmentalists’ speculation that authorities were trying to protect the four poaching suspects, including Italian-Thai Development Plc Premchai Karnasuta.

The minister’s comment came after chairman of Seub Nakhasathien Foundation Sasin Chalermlarp voiced his suspicion over authorities’ handling of the investigation of the case. Mr Sasin also believed that the police were trying to help Mr Premchai.

Gen Surasak strongly dismissed Mr Sasin’s speculation, assuring that nobody was protecting Mr Premchai and authorities had enough evidence and witnesses to press at least ninำ charges against him.

The minister asked the public to have confidence in the justice system of the country.

He said he would call a meeting of the 12-member committee tasked to follow up the investigation of the case tomorrow (Feb 28) to assess the latest progress in the investigation.

The team was headed by director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation Thanya Netithammak
