No, not that Tenerife. Well, yes, sure, the Canary Island, but not those well-worn southern retreats, stuffed with gaudy clubs and English breakfasts. We’re talking the new-and-improved Tenerife – the five-star stays, chic boutiques and Michelin-starred food. The west coast’s Ritz-Carlton Abama, say, where you’ll find two-Michelin-starred MB’s Basque cooking, and single-starred Japanese fine-dining spot Kabuki. Or, in the north-west, stylish San Roque, a restored manor house on the cusp of one of Tenerife’s prettiest villages – romantic as hell, and, praise be, adults-only. At said village, Garachico, there’s no beach, but you will find ladders reaching into warm rock pools, well-preserved colonial architecture and super-fresh cuttlefish at seafront restaurants.

Where to stay: Hotel San Roque. The rooms have polished wooden floors, furniture by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and deep bathtubs, plus a courtyard pool for sun-soaked dips at this pretty 18th-century manor house. The Ritz-Carlton Abama is the splashiest stay on the island. On Airbnb, this apartment in a former tobacco factory has a little courtyard for warm days, while this sleek and spacious apartment for seven has beach views.
