Best Christmas market in the UK for: cooking demonstrations

Rick Stein, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth are just some of the chefs appearing at this four-day food festival by the sea. Marquees are set up on the quayside, where free cooking demonstrations by more than 60 chefs take place, while the market itself has plenty of locally produced food and drink, including brie and yarg from the Cornish Cheese Co, jellies and jams from Cornish Meadow Preserve, bean-to-bar chocolate from the Chocolarder and Seville marmalade from the Da Bara Bakery in Truro. The county’s artists are out in force, too: pick up silver bracelets by The Old Farmhouse Jewellery and animal paintings by Bodmin-based artist Nicola Jane Rowles. The market runs from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 December.

Atmospheric wooden chalets surround the glittering Christmas tree in Town Hall Square, opposite Chester Cathedral. Looking for last-minute stocking fillers? Make a beeline for Moose & Bear’s papercut artworks, hand-poured, Christmas candles from the Cheshire Candle Company (try cranberry and mandarin or frankincense and black cherry ) and The Bethlehem Shop, which sells wood-carved nativity and tree decorations. While you’re browsing, refuel with a bag of crumble fudge from Johnsons Toffees or traditional Portuguese Pasteis de Nata from The Sunrise Patisserie.
