PM2.5 in the atmosphere at 7am this morning exceeded the safety standard in 22 areas, ranging from 22.7μg/m3 (microgram per cubic meter per 24 hours) to 49.4μg/m3, averaging 32.9μg/m3
According to the Air Quality Information Centre of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the air quality in eight areas improved during the morning, leaving 14 areas where PM2.5 in the atmosphere still exceeding safety levels.
The areas with excessive levels of PM2.5 are Wang Thong Lang, Pathumwan, Bang Rak, Yan Nawa, Lat Krabang, Khlong San, Bangkok Noi, Sathorn, Khlong Toei, Bueng Kum, Bangkok Yai, Bang Na, Prawet and Serithai Park in Bueng Kum.
As proposed by the Pollution Control Board, the National Environmental Board has adopted a new safety standard for air quality in Thailand, from 50μg/m3 or to 37.5μg/m3.
The PM2.5 problem, caused by smoke from forest fires, especially in neighbouring countries, and emissions from vehicles and industry, normally starts during the cold season and extends through the summer, when rain is scarce.
