Written by Thailand News

Bonney Gabriel, the newly crowned Miss Universe 2022, is capturing hearts and breaking barriers with her empowering journey. Overcoming self-doubt and embracing a world of possibilities, Gabriel serves as an inspiration to women around the globe.

In an exclusive interview with Thai PBS World, she shared her insights and aspirations.

“I want to spread the message that, as women, age doesn’t matter. It is never too late to start something,” Gabriel stated proudly. At 28, she made history as the oldest Miss Universe winner, proving that dreams have no expiration date. She encourages women not to feel discouraged by societal timelines, emphasising that “Our prime is now, not yesterday, not the future, it is now.”

Reflecting on her journey, Gabriel acknowledged the challenges of overcoming self-doubt and negative thoughts. “The hardest part was overcoming my own self-limiting beliefs,” she revealed. For over two years, she underwent rigorous training, working closely with her coach and mentor. From mock interviews to refining her presentation skills and expanding her knowledge through extensive reading, Gabriel transformed her mindset and gained the confidence to pursue her dreams.

During the final question round of the Miss Universe competition, Gabriel’s passion and convictions shone through. She said “I use my passion for fashion design to make a positive impact, such as reducing pollution and teaching sewing to women who have experienced human trafficking and sexual violence.” This heartfelt response became the defining moment that has forever changed her life.

As the new Miss Universe, Gabriel is dedicated to making a global impact, particularly empowering young women and girls. “Previously, my work impacted people in my community, but now I have a bigger responsibility to inspire others all over the world,” she declared passionately. Gabriel sees her platform as an opportunity to encourage women to believe in themselves and break free from societal constraints.

With a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from the University of North Texas, Gabriel utilises her expertise to promote sustainability. “I prioritise natural fiber fabrics, like Thai silk, which decomposes in the ground,” she explained. She also, however, acknowledges the challenges of finding environmentally friendly materials and incorporates them, with old garments, to minimise waste, showcasing her commitment to ethical fashion.

During her visit to Bangkok, Gabriel eagerly explored the renowned local fabric market, called “Phahurat,” seeking inspiration and collaborating with local tailors. “I always look for innovative ideas and to connect with the local textile industry,” she shared enthusiastically.

Despite her accomplishments, Gabriel has not been immune to the negative aspects of social media, including cyberbullying. Addressing the issue, she said “I feel hurt when people criticise my appearance or post negative comments. It’s important to remember that I am human and have feelings.” Gabriel remains resilient, however, seeing the positive side of criticism and using it as a source of encouragement for other women. “Don’t let others define your self-worth. Believe in yourself,” she advised.
